BEHAVIOR METHODOLOGY

Behavior is always a form of communication. As a professional and as a parent I think it is so important that we remember, that there is a fine line between holding a child accountable for their actions today and holding a grudge against them for yesterday.

Functional Behavioral Assessments
FBA stands for "Functional Behavioral Assessment." It is a process used in the field of special education and applied behavior analysis to understand and analyze the behavior of individuals, particularly those with challenging or disruptive behaviors. An FBA generally includes observation and data collection, looking at:

-
The location or environment where the behavior occurs
-
The ABCs:– the Antecedents (what happens before the behavior), the Behavior itself, and the Consequences (what happens after the behavior)
-
Other factors that may be influencing the behavior.

The goal of an FBA is to determine the underlying causes and functions of a person's behavior so that effective interventions and strategies can be developed to address and manage those behaviors more positively. FBAs are typically conducted by a team of professionals, including special educators, behavior analysts, school psychologists, and other relevant specialists. The process is used to support individuals with disabilities, particularly those who may have difficulty communicating their needs or managing their behavior in a socially acceptable way.
A sample FBA document can be found below.

A Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) is a personalized and structured plan developed for individuals, typically students with disabilities, who exhibit challenging behaviors that interfere with their education and daily life. The purpose of a BIP is to identify, address, and modify these challenging behaviors by using positive and proactive strategies, as well as to provide appropriate support and interventions. Behavior Intervention Plans are a critical part of supporting individuals with disabilities and helping them succeed in school and other settings. They promote a positive and constructive approach to addressing challenging behaviors by focusing on teaching and encouraging appropriate behaviors while minimizing or eliminating undesirable ones.

Additional positive behavioral interventions may include:
